Eye Area Hollowness
Restore soft, natural volume to hollow under-eyes, sunken upper eyelids and temples for a brighter, more rested look, without surgery.
About This Concern
Hollowness around the eyes is one of the earliest signs of aging and one of the most common reasons people look tired, even when they're well rested. It can appear as deep tear troughs under the eyes, sunken or hollow upper eyelids, or hollow temples that make the eyes look deep-set. Hollowness happens as we lose fat, bone support and collagen around the eye, and some people inherit it from a young age. At FusionMed, eye area care is our specialty: our founder is a former internationally trained eye surgeon, bringing a rare, surgical level of precision to this delicate area. We use carefully placed soft filler to restore lost volume under the eyes, in the upper eyelid and at the temples, and PRP to improve the quality of thin skin. Every plan is designed around your anatomy, including hooded and hollow lids common in Asian eye shapes, for a natural, refreshed result that never looks overdone.
Understanding the Cause
Common Causes
- ✦
Fat loss — the fat pads around the eyes shrink and shift with age, leaving hollows under the eyes and in the upper eyelid
- ✦
Bone changes — the eye socket gradually widens with age, reducing support and deepening the tear trough
- ✦
Genetics — some people naturally have deeper tear troughs or deep-set eyes from their 20s
- ✦
Weight loss — significant or rapid weight loss, including on GLP-1 medications, can make the eye area and temples look hollow
- ✦
Collagen loss and thin skin — thinning skin makes hollows and shadows more visible
- ✦
Lifestyle factors — poor sleep, dehydration, sun exposure and smoking can make hollowness look worse

Common Questions
FAQs
What is the best treatment for hollow eyes in Toronto?
Precisely placed tear trough and eyelid filler is the most effective non-surgical treatment for hollow eyes. At FusionMed in Toronto, eye area care is our specialty, led by a former internationally trained eye surgeon, and we often add PRP to improve thin under-eye skin.
What causes hollow eyes?
Hollow eyes are mainly caused by loss of fat, bone support and collagen around the eyes as we age. Genetics and weight loss also play a big role, which is why some people have hollow eyes from a young age.
Is tear trough filler safe?
Tear trough filler is safe when performed by an experienced injector who understands the delicate anatomy of the eye area. This is why eye area care is our specialty, led by a former internationally trained eye surgeon. We use soft, reversible hyaluronic acid filler for a natural result.
Can you treat hollow upper eyelids?
Yes. Sunken upper eyelids can be softly filled to restore a smoother, more youthful lid, including for hooded and hollow lids common in Asian eye shapes. This advanced technique requires precise skill and is one of our specialties.
Is hollowness the same as dark circles?
They are related but different. Hollowness casts a shadow that looks like a dark circle, and filler treats it well. Dark circles can also come from pigment or visible blood vessels, which need different treatments. We assess the cause at your consultation.
How long do results last?
Under-eye and eyelid filler typically lasts 9–18 months, as the eye area moves less than other parts of the face. Temple filler usually lasts 12–18 months. PRP results build over a course of sessions.
Is there downtime?
Very little. Some mild swelling or small bruises may appear for a few days. Most clients return to work the same or next day.
